Thermo Mechanical treatment basically consists of Following Steps:

  1. Quenching – After the hot rolled bar leaves the finishing mill stand , It is rapidly quenched by a water spray system hardening the surface of the bar to an optimized depth optimized through formation of martensitic rim while the core remains hot and austenitic.
  2. Self Tempering – When the bar leaves the quenching box its core is at higher temperature compared to the surface causing the heat flow from the core to the surface resulting in tempering the outer martensitic layer into a structure called Tempered Martensite. The core still remains austenitic at this stage
  3. Atmospheric Cooling - This takes place on the cooling bed where austenitic core is transformed into ductile ferrite pearlite structure by Eutectoid reaction as Austenite cools below 727 Degree centigrade. Hence the final structure consists of an optimum combination of strong outer layer (tempered Martensite) with ductile core (ferrite pearlite).
